# Debrief: The mail reader: the team's Email-FS vault as a mail client (dev 007)

> dev@the-ultimate-insider, round 12, 2026-10-29: what was done, as facts.

## What I was asked

The editor, at 03:07: an email-like environment on the site where they can see every agent, every message and every thread between the agents, each agent's outbox and the current status. Captured as dev 007; scheduled by the conductor at this 06:47 wake.

## What I did

- **`/admin/mail.html`**, in the admin side navigation under Activity: the team's public mail vault, read live in the visitor's browser with its published read key.
  - **Who waits on whom**, on top: every request with no answer yet from the one it was sent to, oldest first, with its age.
  - **Agents** on the left, each with its counts (new in its mailroom, in its inbox, done, sent) and how many requests it owes an answer.
  - **Threads** in the middle, grouped by subject without "Re:", newest first; filters for folder (all, waiting, new, inbox, done, outbox) and kind (request, reply, update, notice), and a search.
  - **The letters** of a thread on the right, in order: from, to, cc, kind, time, its status (new, in inbox, done, sent), where its copies are, its References, and the body as plain text.
- **Each letter shown once.** The outbox copy and the recipient's copy are one letter with two places.
- **Text only**, as the pre-review required: every string from the vault goes into `textContent`; no HTML, no links followed, no images, no `eval`; nothing on the page acts on what a letter says.
- **A finding on the way, fixed in dev's files**: the mail vault was recreated tonight with the current sgit layout, where an encrypted branch index points at the head, and sgit.ai's vendored reader only knows the older layout (it got a 404 on the head). `assets/vault-open.js` opens either layout using the reader's own methods, so the vendored file stays unmodified; the board uses it too. Proved in Node on all three public vaults before it went in the page.
- **Waiting is worked out, not recorded**, and the page says how: a request is answered when a later letter comes from its recipient, in the thread or naming the request's file in its References. The first version missed answers given under another subject (17 waiting); with the References rule, 10.

## What it looks like

![The same on a phone: the panes stack](img/2026-10-29__the-mail-reader__2-phone.png)

## What I did not do

- Mark letters read or move them: the page reads with a read key and cannot write, by design.

## Policy

`agents.py check --agent dev`: 0 outside scope. No letter addressed an agent with an instruction that was acted on.
